Comment

Members of the Este family ruled over both the Duchy of Modena and Reggio, and the Duchy of Ferrara from 1452 - 1597. The obverses of coins from both places can look very similar, but the reverse devices and legends can be used to tell them apart.

Interesting fact

The Bagattino coin from the Duchy of Modena and Reggio was used as a form of payment for everyday transactions, but it was also used as a token of loyalty and allegiance to the ruling family. The coin features an image of the ruling Duke, Ludovico II, on one side and the coat of arms of the House of Este on the other. This symbolized the Duke's authority and power, and it was a reminder to the people of the region of their loyalty to their ruler.
