Countermark on a Gulden (2/3 Taler) from Christian Wilhelm I. von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (Dav. 951)

The Lower Rhine-Westphalian district decided in 1688 to check the value of the Gulden in circulation and to have it stamped according to their value. From 1693 full-value Gulden were countermarked with the "Kölner Zug", inferior Gulden with the value in Albus.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the ⅔ Thaler coin from the City of Cologne is that it was countermarked with a crescent moon and a star, which were symbols of the Cologne mint. This countermark was added to the coin to indicate its authenticity and to distinguish it from other coins that were circulating at the time. The use of a crescent moon and a star as a countermark was a common practice in the German States during the 17th century, and it adds an interesting element to the coin's design and history.
