Issued to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday with a limited release effigy by James Butler MBE RA, only for 2016. This half sovereign was issued in a 5-coin set (573 sales), in a premium 3-coin set (348 sales), in a standard 3-coin set (745 sales) and as individual pieces (1,995 sales).

Since 2009 the full sovereign has omitted the streamer from the helmet of St George however the other sovereign denominations continue to have the streamer.
The Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion issues for 2016 do not feature the Butler effigy obverse.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the ½ Sovereign - Elizabeth II (Butler effigy) 2016 coin is that it features a unique portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Jody Clark, which was first introduced on the 2016 Sovereign coin. This portrait is known as the "Butler effigy" and it is named after the Queen's private secretary, Edward Butler, who was instrumental in the design process.
