Comment

Due to inflation resulting from unchecked government spending and the exodus of silver and gold coinage from the country, the Guatemalan Government introduced cupronickel coinage into circulation.

Due to World War 1, these coins were exported to Europe and melted for their nickel content.

Interesting fact

The ¼ Real coin from Guatemala, minted between 1900 and 1901, has an interesting feature. Despite being made of copper-nickel, a metal alloy that is less valuable than gold or silver, the coin still has a unique design that makes it stand out. On one side, it features the Guatemalan coat of arms, which includes a quetzal bird, a symbol of freedom and independence. On the other side, it shows the denomination and the year of minting. This coin is a great example of how even coins with less valuable materials can still hold significant cultural and historical value.
