Comment

Due to inflation resulting from unchecked government spending and the exodus of silver and gold coinage from the country, the Guatemalan Government introduced cupronickel coinage into circulation.

Due to World War 1, these coins were exported to Europe and melted for their nickel content.

Interesting fact

The ½ Real coin from Guatemala, minted between 1900 and 1901, has an interesting feature. Despite being made of copper-nickel, a metal alloy that is generally resistant to corrosion, these coins are known to have a high likelihood of developing a unique patina over time. This patina, or layer of oxidation, can give the coin a distinctive, earthy tone that many collectors find appealing.
