Prince-bishopric of Würzburg (in German: Fürstbistum Würzburg; Hochstift Würzburg) was an ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire located in Lower Franconia, west of the Episcopal Principality of Bamberg. Würzburg has been a diocese since 743. As definitively established by the Concordat of 1448, the bishops of Germany were chosen by the canons of the cathedral chapter and their election was later confirmed by the pope. Following a common practice in Germany, the princes-bishops of Würzburg were also frequently elected to other ecclesiastical principalities. [A] The last princes-bishops resided in the Würzburg Residence, which is one of the largest Baroque palaces in Europe. As a result of the Treaty of Lunéville in 1801, Würzburg, along with the other ecclesiastical states in Germany, was secularized in 1803 and absorbed by the Bavarian electorate. In the same year, Fernando III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, was compensated with the Salzburg electorate. In Pressburg's peace in 1805, Ferdinand lost Salzburg to the Austrian Empire, but was compensated with the new Grand Duchy of Wurzburg, in Bavaria, which abandoned the territory in exchange for Tyrol. This new state lasted until 1814, when it was again annexed by Bavaria.
The Roman Catholic diocese of Würzburg was restored in 1821 without temporal power.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the ½ Pfenning coin from the Bishopric of Würzburg is that it features a unique design element - a small shield with the coat of arms of the Greiffenklau-Vollraths family, which was the ruling family of the bishopric at the time. This shield is located on the reverse side of the coin, surrounded by a wreath of leaves. This design element sets the coin apart from other coins of the same denomination and time period, and makes it a distinctive and interesting collector's item.
