If a penny or half penny was made that was not an exact copy of the Regal coin, it was regarded as a token, and the law was not applicable. Thus, the counterfeiters simply switched from producing counterfeit coins to minting so-called “Evasion” tokens that had a somewhat similar look to the regal coin
