Comment

1792 British Evasion Copper. Atkins 417, Cobwright P.0010/N.0160. A picture-perfect style of evasion, the obverse has a right-facing bust that mimics the style of the John Wilkinson Conder tokens, but here with the legend PAYABLE AT I WILLIAMS around. Some have the bust with a little diebreak in front of the mouth so that it appears he is sticking out his tongue – an apt sentiment indeed, since someone trying to redeem this coin at Williams’ shop would have received the same gesture - since even if there was an I. Williams (and that is doubtful), there is no promise to redeem the token for good coin, as was found on many legitimately issued Conder tokens of the era. The reverse has a seated figure with a harp, the legend NORTH WALES around and the date 1792 below, quite crude (the last two digits are weak).

Interesting fact

The A Token ½ Penny (North Wales - I Williams) 1792 coin from the United Kingdom is interesting because it was issued during a time of currency shortages and was used as a substitute for the official copper coins of the Royal Mint. It was minted by a private company and has a unique design, featuring the initials "IW" on one side and a crown on the other. This coin is a rare example of a privately minted token that was used as currency in the UK.
