Between 1919 and 1921 a series of experiments were undertaken for a square coinage in nickel to replace the large bronze penny and halfpenny coins.

Interesting fact

The Kookaburra Pattern ½ Penny coin from 1920 features a unique design of a kookaburra bird on the reverse side, which was created by artist Stuart Devlin. It's interesting to note that this design was not adopted as the official coinage design for Australia, but it has become a popular collector's item due to its unique and distinctive design.
