The striking of half nobles was authorized in an ordinance of December 6, 1416 (which also authorized the striking of nobles and quarter nobles). de Pas mentions the ordinance and specifications for the coins (p. 47), but does not number the coin or provide an image, because he said (p.58) none of the half or quarter nobles were known to him at the time of his writing (1863). The devices and legends on this coin match those of the noble struck at the same time.
