The original value of this coin was 2000 Réis. However, in 1683 gold and silver suddenly increased by 20%. There was neither the time nor the capacity at the mints to cast all the coins in circulation. Thus, by the Decree of 28SET1683, the value of all gold and silver coins was increased by 20%. However, instead of starting melting new coins, it continued, for 150 years, to produce exactly the same coins but with a value 20% higher than the face value
