Comment

Diameter varies from 25 mm - 30 mm.

The coins struck at Åbo, nowadays the city of Turku, were some of the first coins struck in Finland. With Finland being part of the Swedish Kingdom, the coins were most likely meant to circulate within the entire kingdom; however, there has been some disputes saying these coins were actually local issues of Turku. Even so, more evidence in needed to support that claim.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the ½ Mark - Gustav Vasa (Type I) 1556-1557 coin from Sweden is that it features a unique design element - a crowned shield with the royal coat of arms, which was a departure from the traditional design of Swedish coins at the time. This design change was a deliberate choice made by King Gustav Vasa himself, who wanted to emphasize his royal authority and differentiate his coins from those of his predecessors. This distinctive design feature has made the coin a popular collector's item among numismatists and history enthusiasts.
