Comment
In 1792 the Directorate of the West Indies requested the king to have coins struck as was done for the East Indies. With resolution 31-12-1793 this request was permitted. The weight and silver content had to be in line with the Dutch coins, although no Quarter Gulden was produced (aside from the Newyearstokens struck between 1756 and 1759 by the mintmasters for private use and on own expense).
The intention was to put these coins into circulation for an extra of 20%, although it is uncertain if this was actually done. It is certain that 8,000 of these Quarter Gulden were shipped to Gold Coast (nowadays Guinea).
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the ¼ Gulden "Kwartgulden" coin from the Netherlands West Indies (Netherlands Antilles) is that it was minted during a time of great economic and political change in the region. The coin was issued in 1794-1795, a period when the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean were facing significant challenges, including the impact of the Haitian Revolution and the decline of the Dutch West India Company. Despite these challenges, the coin remained a widely used denomination in the region and is now a sought-after collector's item.
