Comment

Grolle, 20C.1.7b

Jacqueline of Bavaria ascended the throne of Holland amidst a succession conflict which was ultimately won by Philip of Burgundy. According to the 1428 Reconciliation of Delft, Jacqueline retained her title, but Holland and Zeeland were put under the administration of Philip, until 1433 when he gained full control.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of political turmoil in the County of Holland. Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut, was appointed regent by her father, Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, while he was away fighting in the Hussite Wars. This coin was minted during her regency, which lasted from 1429 to 1431. Despite the political instability, the coin still bears the name of Philip the Good as regent, highlighting the complex power dynamics at play during this time.
