Comment

The Duke of Lorraine and Bar, René II, chose Saint Nicolas as patron of his duchy in thanks for his victory against the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, at the Battle of Nancy in 1477.
The scene on the reverse refers to the miracle in which the saint resuscitated three children killed by a village butcher and placed in a salting tub.
