Comment
The spade represented is an issue of the State of Han issue during the Warring States period, cast circa 350-250 BC.Krause lists this piece as being made of bronze; however, the pattern is listed as being made of copper. As well, Krause change the composition of the 1 Fen piece of the same series from bronze to copper (with all its patterns also being copper). It is possible this type is also made of copper, and Krause just overlooked changing it.
Interesting fact
The ½ Fen coin was designed by the famous Chinese artist, Xu Beihong, who was known for his paintings of horses. The coin features a stylized horse on the obverse, which was meant to symbolize strength and prosperity for the Republic of China.
