Comment
The name "livre de la Compagnie des Indes" may be misleading: it was not in fact manufactured by the Company, but on its behalf, in return for an advance of £50 million to the Treasury, and was in no way intended for the colonies. The aim of LAW's system was to dethrone metallic coinage in favor of paper money. Only the Paris workshop, for technical reasons due to the refining of silver, was able to mint the new currency, but it was not as successful as had been hoped.Speculation in "Compagnie des Indes" securities and the bankruptcy of LAW and his system put an end to the "Compagnie des Indes" livre d'Argent, which was replaced by the "petit Louis" d'Argent in March 1720.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the ¼ Ecu - Louis XV 1720 coin from France is that it was minted during the reign of King Louis XV, who was known as the "Benevolent King" for his efforts to improve the lives of his subjects. Despite his efforts, the coin was not widely accepted during his reign and was eventually demonetized. Today, it is a rare and valuable collector's item, with some mint conditions selling for thousands of dollars.
