(fr)En 1581, le prince de Parme, gouverneur des Pays-Bas, réussit à prendre Cambrai après un long siège. Le duc d'Alençon entra à Cambrai le 17 août 1581 et procéda à une distribution de "bon nombre de médailles triangulaires d'or et d'argent" ; le prince de Parme se retira sur Valenciennes. Le 20 août 1581, le duc d'Alençon reçut solennellement dans la cathédrale de Cambrai le titre de protecteur de la ville.
