Located along the shores of Lake Superior near Bayfield, Wisconsin, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore covers shoreline encompassing 69,723 acres of land and the 21 islands of the Apostle Islands. The area is known for its collection of historic lighthouses, sandstone sea caves, and old-growth remnant forests.

The shores of Lake Superior are known to be home to the “largest, cleanest, and coldest waters of the Great Lakes.” Only one of the 22 Apostle Islands is not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore protected area, and that is Madeline Island.

After featuring a variety of national parks, forests, and scenic highways throughout the early years of the ATB Silver Coin series, in 2018 the United States Mint featured back-to-back issues of US National Lakeshores as representatives of northern states in the Great Lakes region. The 2018 5 oz ATB Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Silver Coin was the second coin released for 2018.
