Comment

Struck over 1770 Germanic Half Thaler. On several surviving examples, the edge retains design from the undertype. According to the Fuld reference, The Washington Pattern Coinage of Peter Getz, five examples have the Circles and Squares edge of a Mexican 4 Reales, one example has a Lettered edge from a 1679 British half crown, and three pieces have twinned olive leaves on the edge, also from Spanish 4 Reales pieces. The remaining 13 examples, including that in the photograph, are described as Plain edge pieces. The "70" from the undertype is visible, inverted, at the lower reverse to the right of the eagle's tail.

Interesting fact

The Pattern ½ Dollar (The Silver Getz Half Dollar, Pattern) 1792 from United States is interesting because it was never officially minted or circulated, yet it is still considered a legitimate pattern coin. It was created as a trial piece to test the design and production process for a proposed half dollar coin, but the project was ultimately abandoned. Despite its unofficial status, the coin has become a sought-after collector's item among numismatists.
