Comment

The Maine Centennial Half Dollar was authorized by Congress to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Maine's Statehood. At the time of release, there was a fair amount of criticism leveled at the design, which was based on the state arms.

The maximum authorized mintage for the coins was 100,000 pieces. Initially, the coins were intended to be issued into circulation at face value, but ultimately the coins were sold by the Maine Centennial Commission to the public for $1 each. The Philadelphia Mint produced 50,028 coins, with the unsold quantity retained by the Maine State Treasurer, rather than melted.

Interesting fact

The Maine Statehood Centennial half dollar, minted in 1920, features a unique design that showcases the state's rich history and natural beauty. The obverse of the coin depicts a portrait of Maine's first governor, William King, while the reverse features a scenic representation of the state's coastline, including a lighthouse and a sailboat. This coin is particularly interesting because it was produced in a limited quantity, with only 25,000 minted, making it a sought-after collector's item among numismatists. Additionally, the coin's composition of 90% silver and 10% copper gives it a unique weight and feel, making it stand out from other coins of its time.
