Comment
HMS Warspite was one of five dreadnoughts of the "fast division" Queen Elizabeth class. She was 600 feet long, her main armament was
8 fifteen inch and 12 six inch guns supported by anti aircraft guns and torpedoes. She carried a compliment of around 1000 officers and ratings. HMS Warspite was one of the first vessels fuelled by oil instead of coal, and her twenty four boilers produced a mean speed of 25 knots. She saw action at the battle of Jutland in the first world war, and at Narvik in the second. During the second world war she fought in both the mediterranean and the far eastern theatres. In fact she was nearly destroyed twice in the mediterranean, firstly in the battle
for crete, and secondly, after receiving a direct hit from a radio controlled glide bomb. As flagship of the eastern fleets she led the last naval bombardment of the second world war. Sadly HMS Warspite met an inglorious end, breaking her tow rope en route to the scrap yard and running aground on the cornish cost.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1993 Gibraltar ⅕ Crown - Elizabeth II (H.M.S. Warspite) gold coin is that it features a unique design, showcasing a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side, while the reverse side depicts a representation of the HMS Warspite, a British battleship that played a significant role in World War II. The coin's design is particularly noteworthy because it was created by sculptor and engraver, Raphael Maklouf, who is known for his iconic coin designs that have been featured on various coins and currencies around the world.
