Comment
Although relatively inexperienced in both action and high command, Major General Dwight Eisenhower assumed control of allied forces preparing for the invasion of North Africa in 1942. An administrative genius with a flair for turning strategy into action, his diplomacy and charm enabled him to weld disparate national units into effective armies. The success of the North African campaign and the subsequent invasions of Sicily and Italy led to his appointment as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in December 1943. He supervised all the planning for the invasion of France (at 4,500,000 strong the largest allied war machine ever) and took the crucial decision on the date of the assualt. Montgomery, with whom he clashed over the final advance into Germany, described him perfectly as a 'military statesman'. He became General of the Army in December 1944, and was elected America's 34th president in 1952.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1994 Gibraltar ⅕ Crown - Elizabeth II (General Eisenhower) gold coin is that it features a unique dual-portrait design, with both a young Queen Elizabeth II and a portrait of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Forces during World War II, on the obverse side. This design was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the liberation of Europe.
