Interesting fact
The ½ Chon (Gwang Mu) 11 (1907) coin from Korea was designed by a Japanese artist named Taro Okamoto, who was commissioned by the Korean government to create a new currency for the country during the colonial period. The coin features a portrait of King Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty and the first emperor of the Korean Empire, on one side, and a stylized plum blossom on the other. The plum blossom was chosen as a symbol of Korea because it represents longevity, purity, and courage, and it is also a popular motif in Korean art and literature.
