Balboa was a Spaniard, first European who crossed the Isthmus, reached the Pacific by land and discovered the Perlas Archipelago (1513).The 9 stars on KM#133.1 represent the 9 provinces of the country at that time. KM#133.2 has 10 stars, as on Januari 1st, 2014 Panamá Oeste became the tenth province of Panama. From that day onward, the Coat of Arms has 10 gold stars.
From 2017 onward, 'REPUBLICA' is spelled as 'REPÚBLICA' on these coins.
