Comment

Balboa was a Spaniard, first European who crossed the Isthmus, reached the Pacific by land and discovered the Perlas Archipelago (1513). The 9 stars represent the 9 provinces of the country at that time (there are now 10).

Since its separation from Colombia in 1903, Panama has used the United States Dollar. These coins have the same specifications as the and circulated alongside it.

Interesting fact

The 1961 Panama ⅒ Balboa coin features a unique design on its reverse side, showcasing a portrait of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, a Spanish explorer who was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from Panama in 1513. The coin's design also includes the Panamanian coat of arms and the words "Republica de Panama" (Republic of Panama) inscribed at the top. This design was created by the Panamanian artist, Roque P. Lopez, and it has become a distinctive feature of Panamanian coinage.
