The coin features a portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a Spanish explorer who was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from Panama in 1513. The coin's design also includes the Panamanian coat of arms and the words "República de Panamá" (Republic of Panama) inscribed on the rim.
